Christmas and Epiphany carols

José de Baquedano (1642-1711), whose 300th death anniversary we are commemorating, was chapel master of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. His works, while scarce, have been described by López-Calo as ‘of such importance, due to their quality, variety and interest, that it places the author in a privileged position in the context of the Spanish music of his time’. Nowadays, we know 5 masses, 17 psalms, 2 magnificats, 1 Nunc dimittis, 20 motets, 7 lamentations for Holy Week, 45 carols in Spanish, and an instrumental ‘Sonata for 3’.
