'Mantis', for drum and hi-hat

'Mantis' seeks to mimic the movements of the insect it is named after through the use of irregular rhythms, the characteristic bright sound of the snare drum rim, and the ‘bite’ effect of the hi-hat. The cells that make up the piece are mostly asymmetrical, reflecting the mantis’s irregular motor activity. As a result, all sections are based on a dotted eighth-note pulse in contrast to a quarter-note pulse. Mantis introduces a novel ensemble featuring a snare drum and hi-hat set, innovating with new effects (alongside traditional ones), such as mute techniques, LED drumsticks, and stage presentation, where lighting plays a significant role.
