Muiñeira «Alfonsina», for Band
Canuto Berea
The symphonic muiñeira titled Alfonsina, composed by Canuto Berea Rodríguez (1836–1891), is a 19th-century musical piece of significant historical and social importance within the Galician community, specifically tied to the city of A Coruña. The work was dedicated to Prince Alfonso XII (1857–1885), as stated on the title page of the manuscript of the score. It is likely that the choice of the title Alfonsina by Berea was due to Queen Isabella II’s visit to A Coruña with her children on 11th September 1858. At the time, Berea composed some barcaroles titled La Pescata for the event. Alfonsina is an innovative composition, being one of the earliest attempts to incorporate Galician airs into symphonic music. This work was awarded the Cross of Charles III. The orchestration of the muiñeira is treated symphonically but without losing at any time the simplicity, naturalness, and spontaneity characteristic of folklore.
