O Conde de Lemos. Fantasy for Band
Carlos Diéguez Beltrán
O Conde de Lemos is a fantasy for band that takes us back to the early 17th century, through the life of an illustrious Galician: Pedro Fernández de Castro, Andrade y Portugal (Monforte de Lemos, 1576 - Madrid, 1622). Known as ‘the Great Count of Lemos’, he held very important positions in the Spain during the reign of Felipe III. He was patron of the most important literary authors of the Spanish Golden Age, such as Lope de Vega (who was the Count's personal secretary for a while), Miguel de Cervantes, Luis de Góngora, and Francisco de Quevedo. This Fantasy for Band takes us back to the life of this Galician nobleman using a language that brings us closer to the time of medieval troubadours and minstrels, with its music with Celtic features. This work is divided into three main thematic parts:
- 1. Sosiego en las Tierras de Lemos: this is the introduction, where the music leads us ‘through the sound of the bells, the liturgical sequence of the low brass instruments and the melancholic sound of the oboe’ to contemplate a life of retreat, meditation, and calm in the condal house of Lemos.
- 2. Fiesta en el Condado: it describes the feelings of the people and the atmosphere of the festivities to welcome the lords of Castro when they returned to the County. The minstrels, Celtic music, and the chivalrous adventures narrated by the Count himself are the protagonists of this celebration.
- 3. En la Corte de Nápoles: it symbolises a ballroom dance in Naples, where the Count was Viceroy. The dance begins with a minuet tempo that will be transformed with the memories and nostalgia for Lemos until it becomes a Celtic dance full of strength and feeling.
