José de Baquedano (1642-1711), whose 300th death anniversary we are commemorating, was chapel master of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. His works, while scarce, have been described by López-Calo as ‘of such importance, due to their quality, variety and interest, that it places the author in a privileged position in the context of the Spanish music of his time’. Nowadays, we know 5 masses, 17 psalms, 2 magnificats, 1 Nunc dimittis, 20 motets, 7 lamentations for Holy Week, 45 carols in Spanish, and an instrumental ‘Sonata for 3’. The complete collection of his Christmas and Epiphany carols is included in this edition, for voices on bass line.
