It was in 1917, amidst the Mexican Civil War, when Luis Taibo embarked on the composition of Galaica, his first foray into symphonic music. The composer found inspiration in the poetry collection Aromas de leyenda by Valle-Inclán, feeling deeply connected to the verses from the very beginning. Almost as an act of redemption, Taibo drew upon those distant memories—he, who would never forget his Galician roots or identity, inevitably deepened by the passage of years and marked by emigration. Thus, the score reveals two distinct perspectives: on one hand, motifs with a strong traditional flavour unfold like Galicia’s lush, wild, and blossoming nature; on the other hand, Taibo demonstrates a remarkable technical maturity, employing contemporary language techniques and sonorities, enhancing orchestral colour development and dynamic usage. This dimension is directly linked to the Mexican reality, showcasing the masterful adaptation of Taibo to the New World without losing his sentimental expressiveness for his longed-for homeland.
